The John Volken Foundation provides people in need with the opportunity to help
themselves become successful, contributing members of society.

The John Volken Academy Program, established by the John Volken Foundation, is modeled after the therapeutic community approach to addiction treatment. Providing students with healthy lifestyle changes is essential to living successful and sober lives—forever! The Program is overseen by program directors, supported by a board of directors, and receives consultation from addiction professionals and healthy-living specialists. Combining the therapeutic community approach with professional guidance makes our Program extremely effective and truly life-changing.

Founder John Volken was awarded the Dalai Lama Humanitarian Award, by His Holiness the Dalai Lama, for effectively changing lives.

At the age of 18, John Volken immigrated to Canada with less than one hundred dollars to his name. In 1981, he opened United Furniture Warehouse and over the next 20 years, expanded to having more than 150 stores and annual sales of more than $200,000,000. For his accomplishments John received many awards, including being named “Entrepreneur of the Year” for Canada’s Pacific Region. Having achieved his business goals, John remembered his time as a young boy in an orphanage and his dream to help people in need. In 2004, John sold United Furniture Warehouse and devoted $45,000,000 of his own wealth and his full-time efforts to the John Volken Foundation. He continues to manage the Foundation without pay or compensation.

“Helping others has brought me tremendous joy and satisfaction. I believe that once we have provided for our families, we should then work for the good of all.” –John Volken
